"Rainbow Trout" (2025) Painting

This piece is part of a collection of paintings that mark the beginning of my oil painting journey. Rainbow trout are one of my favourite fish - a species native to the coasts of Canada, but introduced to the Great Lakes in the late 1800s. Because they became naturalized, they were an important food source for Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe people. They are special to me because when thinking about the 1800s, where Indigenous children were bound to residential school and communities were suffering from many forms of colonization and trauma, discovering rainbow trout as a new source of food to hunt would have been an incredibly special joy for Indigenous communities. My great great grandparents would have seen this change - and now I see it when I visit the Great Lakes.

All paintings will be carefully packaged and shipped. Paintings will not be shipped out until April 30th.
